Artist Statement
As an aspiring journalist, I hope to create content that makes people more aware of the social and political injustices that are occurring in the world around them. I want to effectively influence people to stand up to these injustices after viewing my work. Using the skills I have learned throughout my study of media in the age of technology and digitization, I aspire to be a source of innovation and creativity for my generation.
Hurricane Sandy damaged my neighborhood Howard Beach, and all of the destruction made me want extremely devastated me and my family. People posting on social media didn’t understand the severity of the actual destruction because they were writing from an outsiders perspective. I wrote a blog and went to social media to provide an insider experience to the aftermath of the hurricane in a flood zone.
Coming to the city more, I was fascinated by Times Square Billboards, advertisements, and brochures that took my mind off of the looming devastation and destruction that awaited me back at home. I had found a new hobby to take me away from my somber days spent shivering and hungry in my dark home. This influenced me to write about my experiences in the city and hopefully give people who suffered a lot after the hurricane some relief. It was a trying time for us, and our lack of food, electricity, and warmth should have been voiced immediately so that people were aware of the struggles we faced, and what they could do socially and politically to avoid this from having the same consequences in the event of another natural disaster.
